Category:NanotechnologyThanks to its remote status, Antarctica provides an excellent lab to study cosmic ray interactions with ice, air, and the surface. Without the complexities of atmosphere, gravity or atmosphere, Antarctic ice also provides a near-perfect medium to study atmospheric ionization and particle transport. As will be described in the talk, we use Antarctic cosmic rays to observe nuclei produced by collisions of heavier cosmic rays with the Earth’s atmosphere. In particular, we use the cosmic rays to study the production of low-energy neutrons. We discovered a large production rate of neutrons that cannot be explained by standard hadronic interaction models. These results will be presented in the talk, along with several other recent discoveries of the ANITA collaboration, which includes members from the SLAC, Fermilab, and Yale groups.
Sammy Dall’Agata is the current director of the Asia-Pacific Centre for Theoretical Physics (APCTP). He received his PhD from the Physics Department at the University of California, San Diego, in 1994. After post-doctoral work in the Physics Department at Yale University from 1994 to 1997, he joined the APCTP in 1997. His research interests include particle astrophysics and general relativity.Q:
